The Secret
  • AlphaWord mode:
      • AlphaWord is the word processor program that is built into the AlphaSmart
  • Co:Writer Mode:
      • Co:Writer is the word prediction mode loaded into the AlphaSmart
  • Continually switching back and forth allows the user to create and edit sentences, but, you need to know which one is active.

      • Press TAB key
      • Begin using word prediction

      • Press the “Applets” key and choose Co:Writer

Using Co:Writer


  • As soon as AlphaWord loads and opens a file (1 through 8), “wake up” Co:Writer by pressing the TAB key.

  • Start typing.  Co:Writer will immediately begin to suggest words.  If the word you want is in the list, either:
    • Typing its number or
    • Pressing the up/down keys to point to the word and then press return to choose it

  • When you are done with the sentence, end it with a period, question mark or exclamation mark.  The sentence is automatically transferred into AlphaWord

True Keys Mode
  • To type numbers or punctuation within a document, press the Esc key to enter “True Keys”  Mode


  • Press Esc again to exit “True Keys Mode

"To edit in AlphaWord,"
  • To edit in AlphaWord, press tab key or one of the arrow keys.


  • The indicator will change from > to *, and you can edit without Co:Writer.
