Local Assistive Technology Services (LATS) Certificate Program

This LATS Professional Development program certifies you have
acquired the competencies necessary to provide appropriate Assistive
Technology Services to students with disabilities:
• Facilitate IEP teams to use an effective team decision making process to
appropriately consider students for their assistive technology needs,
resolve computer access issues and reduce potential for costly hearings
and litigation.
• Locate and use available local, state and national resources to assist
with facilitation.
• Implement selected assistive technology devices and software within
the curriculum.
• Over time, apply learned skills to assess student needs and provide a
range of assistive technology services in general and special education
classrooms.
To demonstrate mastery of course competencies, you will have 10
months to conduct four Device Loans and equipment trials and evaluate
their impact and to conduct one supervised assessment. ASHA CEUS are
available for this training through the AAC Institute.
At a minimum, each person should have willingness to serve as an
AT Resource Person, good interpersonal skills, certification in special
education or a related field, a valid email account, comfort with either
Windows or Mac operating system, creativity, patience, expertise with
some aspect of technology - - and time.
